New Delhi, August 3: The import of laptops, tablets and personal computers is now subject to immediate restrictions, according to a notice released by the Indian government on Thursday.
The notification has been issued with “immediate effect” by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
The intention, according to reports, is to promote locally manufactured products.
The import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers and ultra small form factor computers and servers was restricted by DGFT.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department of Commerce, Government of India’s notice stated, “The import would be allowed against a valid licence for restricted imports”.
Additionally, it said that the indicated items are not prohibited from import under the baggage rules.
“Exemption from Import Licencing requirements is provided for Import of All-in-one Personal Computer, or Ultra small form factor Computer, including those purchased from e-commerce portals, through post or courier. Imports shall be subject to payment of duty as applicable,” said the notice issued by the government.
The notification stated that the aforementioned electronics, which are an essential part of Capital Good, are likewise exempt from import licensing requirements.
