New Delhi, August 12: The Delhi Services Act became a law after President Droupadi Murmu gave her approval. Amit Shah, Union Home Minister, introduced The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, on August 1 in the Lok Sabha. The measure is intended to replace the divisive National Capital Service Control Ordinance.

The Rajya Sabha then approved it on August 7. With 131 votes in support and 102 votes against, the law allowing the central government control over bureaucrats in the national capital was approved by the Upper House.

The Bill suggested giving the centre authority over decisions regarding the suspension and investigation of national capital authorities. It was introduced into the House of Representatives amid the Manipur issue that caused a stir in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

After the government introduced a bill in parliament to regulate services and officer postings in Delhi, the monsoon session of the Parliament was chaotic due to resistance from the majority of the opposition parties.

The Center’s May 19-issued Ordinance was intended to be replaced by the Delhi Services Bill. The Supreme Court’s decision that the Delhi Government had power over the management and control of civil personnel, with the exception of subjects pertaining to public order, police and land, led to the issuance of the ordinance a week later.

The bill has been called the most “undemocratic” piece of paper ever introduced in Parliament by the AAP.
