Swarnodip Kundu, a first-year student at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, passed away on Thursday after allegedly falling from the hostel’s balcony on Wednesday night.

Deepsekhar Dutta, a 19-year-old university student in his second year of economics and a resident of the Bankura district, has been named as the apprehended suspect. According to the police, the arrest was made early on Sunday.

Manotosh Ghosh, 20, a Hooghly resident and a second-year sociology student, has been named as the second arrested suspect.

In the meantime, Sourav Chowdhury, a former university student and the third person detained, was brought before a city court on August 12 and remanded to police detention until August 22.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited the hostel on Thursday and promised that serious measures will be taken to ensure that justice was done.

Talking to the media after visiting the university hostel, Governor said, “I went to the hostel, I discussed with the students… and also the teachers, they want justice. Justice will be done. They presented before me some of the basic issues here. We’ll address them… We’ll do our best, we’ll give them justice, and strong action will be taken…”
