Six die trying to rescue cow from well in Ranchi village; NDRF recovers bodies

Ranchi, Aug.18: Six died when an unlined well filled with rain water collapsed in order to rescue a cow which had fallen into a 50-feet deep well.

The incident took place in Piska village, about 40km from here, under the Muri police station area.

An NDRF official informed this saying as many as seven were inside when the well collapsed on Thursday evening.

“Out of seven, we could rescue three while we couldn’t save the other four. Out of the three rescued, two died during treatment. Thus, the total death figure in the incident remained six. Carcass of the cow was also recovered,” he said.

Asked about the duration of the rescue operation, the NDRF official said: “The rescue operation started at 8.50pm yesterday. It continued till 1.30pm today. As many as 20 rescuers under the leadership of inspector Ravi Kant completed the rescue operation.”

The cow had fallen into the well while grazing grass. To save the life of the cow, seven people entered the well. When the cow was being taken out of the well, the well got sunk. Rescuers got buried in the well. There was hue and cry in the entire village. The villagers tried their best to save the people buried in the well.

As soon as the information about the incident was received, Silli police station in-charge Akashdeep and Muri police station in-charge Vipul Kumar Jha along with the team reached the spot at around quarter to five in the evening. An earthmover was pressed into service and the rescue work started.
