New Delhi, Sept 27: In light of the current law and order scenario, the Manipur government on Wednesday declared the entire state to be a “disturbed area.”

As per the information provided, the entire state, with the exception of 19 particular police station areas, has been designated as a “disturbed area” under the provisions of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

According to a notification from the state government, the authorities believe that “violent activities of various extremist/insurgent groups warrant the use of the Armed Forces in aid of civil administration in the entire state of Manipur.”

The notification goes on to say that due to the “overall law and order situation in the state and the capability of the state machinery, the state government has decided to maintain the status quo on the present disturbed area status” for a period of six months.

The 19 police station areas that are not included fall under the jurisdiction of Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Sekmai, Lamsang, Patsoi, Wangoi, Porompat, Heingang, Lamlai, Irilbung, Leimakhong, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Nambol, Moirang, Kakching, and Jiribam.

Massive student protest rallies over the kidnapping and murder of two students took place in the state capital Imphal on Tuesday. After images of the students’ bodies surfaced online on Tuesday, a new round of protests got underway. Additionally, there were clashes between the protestors and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), which resulted in at least 45 protesters being hurt.

In preparation for potential unrest, sizable contingents of Manipur Police, CRPF, and RAF soldiers have been stationed around Imphal and other regions of the state.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that he “assure the people of the state that both the state and central government are closely working together to nab the perpetrators.”

The investigation into the deaths of the two young individuals has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
