Mumbai: Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, whose son Mihir Shah is accused of a fatal hit-and-run incident in Mumbai’s Worli, has been granted provisional bail upon payment of ?15,000. The accident, which occurred early Sunday, resulted in the death of 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa and left her husband injured.

Mihir Shah, who allegedly drove the speeding BMW after visiting a pub in Juhu, is currently on the run. A notice has been issued to prevent him from leaving the country, and his girlfriend, suspected of aiding his escape, is being questioned. Mihir Shah’s phone has been switched off since the incident.

Earlier today, a city court remanded Rajesh Shah to judicial custody for 14 days. Rajesh Shah is affiliated with the Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He and Rajrishi Bidawat, the driver who was reportedly forced into the passenger seat by the intoxicated Mihir Shah, were arrested on Sunday. The police believe both men assisted Mihir in evading capture.

Authorities have stated that Rajesh Shah made phone calls to his son after the accident. Fourteen police teams have been formed to locate and arrest Mihir Shah. Multiple charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, have been filed against all three involved.

The victim, Kaveri Nakhwa, was traveling with her husband, Pradip, when the BMW lost control and struck their two-wheeler. The severe impact caused the vehicle to overturn, throwing the couple onto the front of the car. While Pradip managed to jump off to save himself, Kaveri was tragically dragged for 100 meters as the car attempted to flee.

This incident follows a similar case in Pune, where a speeding Porsche driven by a minor resulted in the deaths of two young engineers.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed deep concern over the rising number of hit-and-run cases in the state. He condemned the misuse of power and influence to evade justice, asserting that such actions will not be tolerated under his administration.

“No one, whether rich, influential, or the offspring of bureaucrats or ministers, affiliated with any party, will have immunity as long as I am the Chief Minister of the State. I have zero tolerance for injustice,” Shinde stated on social media platform X.

The court has directed that the investigation continue, with the next steps pending further developments in the case.
