Kathua, J&K: In a violent confrontation on Monday, terrorists attacked an Indian Army vehicle in the Machedi area of Billawar, located in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir. Initial reports indicate that armed terrorists opened fire on the vehicle, leading to an immediate retaliation by the soldiers and ensuing in a gunbattle.
Additional reinforcements were quickly dispatched to the area. During the encounter, two Army soldiers sustained injuries, as confirmed by local police authorities.
This assault on the Army convoy occurred just a day after security forces successfully neutralized six terrorists in twin encounters in Kulgam. Officials reported that the bodies of two terrorists were recovered from the Modergam encounter site, while four bodies were retrieved from the Chinnigam site on Sunday.
Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain lauded the recent eliminations of terrorists as a significant achievement, stating, “Undoubtedly, this is a big milestone in the efforts towards strengthening the security environment. These successes are very meaningful both substantively as well as in terms of messaging.”
DGP Swain emphasized that the successful operations reflect the robust security architecture and the crucial role of human intelligence in combating terrorism. “This is an indication that the security architecture and involvement of people is leading to the flow of human intelligence and this fight (against terror) will be taken to its logical conclusion,” he added.
Brigadier Prithviraj Chauhan, Commander of the 1 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, described the elimination of terrorists in South Kashmir as a significant setback to the Hizbul Mujahideen group.
The Indian Army paid tribute to two soldiers, Lance Naik Pardeep Kumar and Sepoy Pravin Janjal Prabhakar, who lost their lives during the anti-terror operations in Kulgam. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army conveyed, “Chinar Corps Commander, Chief Secretary of J-K, DGP J-K, and other dignitaries and all ranks paid homage to Lance Naik Pardeep Kumar and Sepoy Pravin Janjal Prabhakar, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in Kulgam on 06 Jul 2024.”
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has experienced a surge in terror-related incidents in recent months. Last month, security forces gunned down three terrorists in an encounter in the Gandoh-Bhaderwah sector of Doda district.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to strengthen security and curb terrorist activities in the region persist.
