New Delhi: The recent by-elections across seven states have delivered unexpected results, with the opposition INDIA alliance securing victories in six assembly seats, significantly denting the ruling BJP’s fortunes.

In a notable sweep, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress claimed all four seats in West Bengal, demonstrating strong voter support. In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress performed well, clinching two out of three seats, including a notable victory by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur in Dehra.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) retained its stronghold in Punjab’s Jalandhar West constituency, where Mohinder Bhagat emerged victorious in a closely contested election, defeating Congress’s Surinder Kaur by a substantial margin of 37,325 votes.

The bypoll results, which began counting at 8 am, showcased a varied electoral landscape:

  • Himachal Pradesh: Congress candidates secured victories in Nalagarh and Dehra, while BJP narrowly won in Hamirpur.
  • West Bengal: Trinamool Congress candidates swept Bagda, Ranaghat, and Raiganj, with another leading in Maniktala.
  • Uttarakhand: Congress’s Qazi Nizamuddin led in Manglaur amidst election day violence, while Badrinath saw Congress’s Lakhpat Singh Butola ahead.
  • Tamil Nadu: DMK’s Anniyur Siva led in Vikravandi against strong competition.
  • Bihar: JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal faced tough competition in Rupauli, with RJD’s Bima Bharti trailing.

These results mark a significant shift in political dynamics ahead of anticipated state elections, underscoring the electorate’s evolving preferences and challenges for the ruling BJP.
