Dehra: Kamlesh Thakur, the wife of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, clinched victory in the Dehra assembly bypoll, marking a significant political turnaround in the region.
In her electoral debut, Ms. Thakur secured 32,737 votes, surpassing her nearest rival, BJP’s Hoshiyar Singh, by a substantial margin of 9,399 votes. The bypoll, held with a robust voter turnout of 65.42%, saw intense competition following the resignation of incumbent Independent members now contesting under the BJP banner.
The Dehra constituency, historically dominated by the BJP, witnessed a pivotal shift in favor of Congress, highlighting Chief Minister Sukhu’s effective campaign strategy.
Chief Minister Sukhu expressed satisfaction over the outcome, emphasizing the Congress party’s resurgence post the recent Lok Sabha elections setback in the state. “After securing victories in two seats and a competitive race in Hamirpur, our confidence has been bolstered,” he stated, attributing the win to his government’s dedicated service to the public over the past 16 months.
He further remarked on the failure of what he described as a conspiracy to destabilize his government, alluding to recent political challenges faced by the Congress in Himachal Pradesh.
Earlier this year, the Congress government faced a crisis when several of its MLAs crossed party lines during the Rajya Sabha elections, leading to disqualification and subsequent electoral implications that reshaped the political landscape in the state.
