New Delhi: As the world grapples with a severe heatwave, with temperatures reaching unprecedented highs, air conditioners (AC) have become essential for comfort. However, while ACs offer relief from the scorching heat, sleeping with them on for prolonged periods can have adverse effects on health.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has highlighted the severity of the situation, warning of an “extreme heat epidemic” due to climate change. The European Copernicus network recently reported that the past few days have been the hottest ever recorded worldwide, with temperatures soaring up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Health Effects of Sleeping with AC On:

  1. Dry Eyes: ACs remove moisture from the air, leading to dryness, itching, and discomfort in the eyes.
  2. Lethargy: Cool temperatures can lower metabolic rates, causing fatigue and drowsiness.
  3. Dehydration: Dry air from ACs can cause rapid moisture loss, necessitating increased fluid intake to stay hydrated.
  4. Dry or Itchy Skin: Low humidity levels can cause the skin to lose moisture, leading to dryness, flakiness, and irritation.
  5. Headaches: Sudden temperature changes and exposure to cold, dry air can trigger headaches and sinus congestion.
  6. Respiratory Issues: Cold, dry air can irritate airways, exacerbating conditions like asthma and allergies.
  7. Allergies and Asthma: Air conditioning systems can harbor allergens such as dust, pollen, and mold, triggering allergic reactions.
  8. Noise Pollution: The constant hum of an AC can disrupt sleep patterns and cause annoyance.
  9. Infectious Diseases: Poorly maintained AC systems can spread bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
  10. Indoor Pollutants: ACs can accumulate pollutants like dust, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), causing respiratory irritation and health issues.

Dr. Vidya Vimal, a senior consultant paediatrician at SP Medifort Hospital in Trivandrum, advises that while ACs are safe for newborns if used correctly, it is crucial to regulate and adjust the temperature appropriately. She recommends switching on the AC at least 20 minutes before bringing the newborn into the room and maintaining a temperature between 25-27 degrees Celsius.

Direct exposure to cold air should be avoided to prevent coughs and potential pneumonia. Some newborns and infants may be allergic to cold temperatures, so it is essential to avoid extreme cold. Additionally, air conditioners should be cleaned frequently to prevent allergies caused by dust and other particles.

As the heatwave continues, understanding the health impacts of prolonged AC use and taking appropriate measures can help mitigate potential health risks while ensuring comfort during extreme temperatures.
