Mumbai: Several regions in Maharashtra, including Pune and Nashik, are grappling with severe flooding following relentless heavy rain. In Nashik’s Malegaon, twelve people are stranded due to the rising water levels of the Girna river. Disaster response teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire department are on-site, preparing for rescue operations.
Nashik has experienced 250 mm of rain over the past 48 hours. The Gangapur dam had to release water last night after reaching 86 percent capacity. A 29-year-old man is missing following the rise in the Godavari river levels, prompting the removal of several shops on the riverbank and warnings to residents from local authorities.
In Pune, areas such as Ekta Nagar have been inundated, leading to the evacuation of several homes. The Army has been called in to assist with rescue efforts in the affected localities. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is set to visit the waterlogged areas in Pune today, inspecting the Sinhagad Road area and interacting with residents.
In Palghar district, heavy rain caused a road accident where four speeding bikes crashed due to low visibility, resulting in seven injuries, four of which are critical. The weather department has issued warnings for more rain in Pune, Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Satara, and Ratnagiri.
This year’s monsoon has caused widespread devastation across the country. Over 300 people have perished in landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad. Flash floods in Himachal Pradesh have resulted in 13 deaths and several missing persons.
Further north, a cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir has led to the closure of the Srinagar-Leh national highway, severing Kashmir Valley’s connection to Ladakh. In Uttar Pradesh, six districts remain flood-affected, with five fatalities reported from rain-related incidents.
