Nashville: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is facing serious allegations from the US state of Tennessee, with Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti’s office filing a lawsuit accusing the company of designing Instagram in a way that deliberately fosters social media addiction among teenagers.
Investigation to Examine Instagram’s Design Practices
According to a Reuters report, an investigation will soon examine whether Meta genuinely designed its Instagram platform in a manner intended to hook teenagers into social media addiction. Tennessee’s Attorney General alleges that Meta violated the state’s consumer safety laws through this design approach.
AG Alleges Meta Suppressed Internal Research on Harm to Teens
The lawsuit makes a serious allegation that Meta knowingly built a product engineered to continuously provoke teenage users. The Attorney General claims that Meta’s internal research findings, which reportedly detail how Instagram poses risks to teenagers, were never made public.
Zuckerberg Allegedly Informed of Harmful Effects, Didn’t Fund Fixes
The lawsuit states that Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was informed by his own employees about internal research showing the platform’s negative impact on teenagers, but allegedly failed to provide sufficient funding to address the issue. The Attorney General further accuses Meta of making misleading public statements regarding the extent of harmful content present on the platform.
Tennessee Seeks Penalties and Mandatory Changes to Instagram
In the lawsuit, Tennessee’s Attorney General has asked the court to impose penalties on Meta and mandate necessary changes to Instagram, specifically citing features such as autoplay, Instagram Reels and notifications. According to Reuters, Meta has defended itself by arguing that the state’s allegations are based on content posted by users on the platform, asserting that Section 230 of the US Communications Decency Act shields it from legal liability for third-party content.
