Ranchi: In a significant decision, the Jharkhand government has approved the release of 39 inmates serving life sentences in various jails across the state. This decision was made during the 31st meeting of the Jharkhand State Sentence Review Board, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, on Monday.

The meeting reviewed the cases of 74 inmates serving life sentences in different state prisons. After thorough discussions and evaluations, Chief Minister Hemant Soren approved the release of 39 inmates based on the recommendations of the Sentence Review Board. The review process involved detailed consideration of opinions from courts, police superintendents of the respective districts, jail superintendents, and probation officers.

Key officials present at the meeting included Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary and Legal Advisor of the Law (Justice) Department Nalin Kumar, Principal Secretary of Home, Prisons, and Disaster Management Department Vandana Dadel, Judicial Commissioner of Ranchi Diwakar Pandey, Director General and Inspector General of Police Jharkhand Anurag Gupta, and Inspector General of Prisons Jharkhand Sudarshan Prasad Mandal.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren instructed officials to verify the family background, social, and economic status of the released inmates. He emphasized the importance of creating special work plans for income generation to support their livelihood. He directed that released inmates be connected with skill development programs and employment opportunities such as dairy farming, poultry farming, and animal husbandry. The Chief Minister stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to ensure that released inmates do not face social or economic challenges after their release.

Additionally, the Chief Minister highlighted the moral responsibility of integrating the released inmates into the mainstream of society. Special attention should be given to older inmates, ensuring their family situations are understood and addressed.

This decision marks a progressive step towards rehabilitating and reintegrating former inmates, focusing on their overall well-being and contribution to society.
