Kolkata: Newly revealed details from the post-mortem report of a trainee doctor in Kolkata underscore the horrific nature of her recent rape and murder. The autopsy indicates that the violence inflicted on her was so severe that the shards from her shattered spectacles pierced her eyes.

The victim, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was discovered dead in a seminar hall on Friday morning. The prime suspect, Sanjoy Roy—a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police—has been arrested in connection with the crime.

According to the post-mortem report, which was made available to the victim’s family on Monday, she sustained numerous injuries, including cuts on her hands and face. Notably, the report suggests that the glass shards from her broken glasses contributed to the eye injuries.

The report confirms that the injuries were inflicted while the victim was alive, with evidence of sexual assault. It also details that she was killed by strangulation and smothering, with the estimated time of death between 3 and 5 a.m. on Friday.

Following the murder, Roy allegedly went home and attempted to cover his tracks by washing his clothes and removing evidence. Blood-stained shoes found during a police search further implicate him.

The brutality of the crime has triggered widespread protests across multiple cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, where doctors have halted elective services until the investigation concludes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given the Kolkata Police a deadline to resolve the case, warning that it will be handed over to the CBI if additional suspects are not apprehended by Sunday.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal assured that progress is being made and promised to keep the family informed. If the family remains dissatisfied, the Chief Minister’s directive to involve the CBI will be followed.
