Washington, D.C.: With just eight weeks remaining before the United States votes in the presidential election, Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic contender Kamala Harris took the stage for their first-ever debate. The historic moment was marked by a handshake, breaking an eight-year streak of no physical greetings between presidential candidates.
Harris, introducing herself to Trump for the first time, opened by addressing the economy—a key issue on voters’ minds. Highlighting her middle-class background, she emphasized her plans to support families and small businesses if elected. Harris also took aim at Trump’s track record, accusing him of favoring tax cuts for “billionaires and big corporations.” She reminded viewers of the state of the economy when Joe Biden took office, stating, “Donald Trump has no plan for you.”
The debate quickly escalated as Trump attacked Harris over the Biden administration’s handling of immigration. In response, Harris dismissed his comments as “a bunch of lies, grievances, and name-calling” from the “same old tired playbook.”
Harris further criticized Trump’s legacy, saying, “Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression, the worst public health epidemic in a century, and the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. We have been cleaning up Donald Trump’s mess ever since.”
At one point, Trump shifted to personal attacks, calling Harris a Marxist and referring to her father as one as well. Harris, unshaken, smiled through the attack. Trump also boasted about his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming, “We did a phenomenal job with the pandemic,” a statement that Harris indirectly mocked.
Abortion rights became another focal point of the debate, with Harris warning that Trump would ban abortions if re-elected. Trump quickly dismissed her claim as a lie, but struggled to answer whether he would veto a national abortion ban, suggesting that such legislation would never pass Congress.
On immigration, Harris predicted that Trump would continue to focus heavily on the issue, encouraging viewers to attend his rallies, where, she said, he talks about “fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter.” She claimed people often leave his rallies due to boredom. A visibly upset Trump retorted, saying, “No one goes to Harris’ rallies.”
The debate took an unexpected turn when Trump referenced a bizarre social media conspiracy theory, claiming that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were eating pets. “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the cats,” he said, drawing laughter from Harris.
Trump also attacked the Biden administration’s record on crime control, which Harris called “rich” coming from someone facing multiple criminal charges. Trump responded by accusing Democrats of weaponizing the Department of Justice to target him politically, referencing an assassination attempt he claims was linked to Democratic rhetoric, saying, “I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things they’ve said about me.”
As the debate concluded, it was clear that the clash between Harris and Trump had set the stage for a contentious race, with both candidates focusing on their respective visions for the economy, immigration, and key social issues.
