Texas Floods: Death Toll Rises to 52; Desperate Search for 27 Missing Girls

Texas: The death toll from catastrophic flash floods in Central Texas has risen to at least 52, including 15 children, as rescue teams conduct a desperate, large-scale search for dozens of missing people. The focus of the frantic operation is on 27 girls who were swept away from a Christian summer camp when the Guadalupe River surged by more than 26 feet in a matter of hours.

Tragedy at Camp Mystic

The epicenter of the disaster is Texas’s Kerr County, where 44 of the fatalities have been confirmed. The area’s Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian retreat for girls, was completely destroyed when a wall of water tore through it before dawn on Friday. Rescuers have been searching the debris-filled river for survivors, with officials confirming more than 850 people have been rescued across the region, some plucked from trees and rooftops by helicopter. The search continues, but hopes of finding more survivors are diminishing as time passes.

Questions Over Lack of Warning

The disaster has raised serious questions about the adequacy of weather warnings. Many local officials and residents said they were caught completely by surprise by the storm’s ferocity, which dumped months’ worth of rain in just a few hours. While the National Weather Service issued a “moderate” flood watch, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged it had not accurately predicted the extreme rainfall. The situation has been linked by some, including former NOAA director Rick Spinrad, to potential forecast degradation following staff cuts at the weather agency.

Federal Response and Grim Outlook

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster for multiple counties and has formally requested federal assistance. President Donald Trump, who called the event “terrible” and “shocking,” said he was “heartbroken” and has pledged the full support of the federal government to aid in the response. While the heaviest rains have passed, flood watches remain in effect for the saturated region, with fears that any additional rainfall could exacerbate the already devastating situation.
