New Delhi: A tragic incident occurred in Faridabad on Friday when a bank manager and a cashier lost their lives after their SUV was submerged in a flooded underpass due to heavy rainfall in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The victims, identified as Punyashreya Sharma, manager of HDFC Bank’s branch in Gurugram’s Sector 31, and cashier Viraj Dwivedi, were returning home to Faridabad when the accident happened.
The two men were driving a Mahindra XUV700 when they reached the Old Faridabad railway underpass, which had been flooded by the continuous downpour. Despite seeing the waterlogged underpass, they misjudged the depth of the water and attempted to drive through it. As their vehicle began to submerge, both men tried to escape and swim to safety but tragically drowned.
Police Response and Rescue Efforts
According to police officials, a rescue team arrived at the scene after receiving information about the stranded SUV. Sharma’s body was recovered from the vehicle, while Dwivedi’s body was found after an hours-long search at around 4 am on Saturday.
The heavy rains that caused this tragic incident have been affecting Delhi-NCR for the second consecutive day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for Thursday and Friday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the region due to a depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh.
Impact of Rain in NCR
The continuous rainfall has led to waterlogging and severe traffic jams across various parts of NCR, including key areas in Gurugram such as Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and IFFCO Chowk. The IMD issued a yellow alert for moderate rainfall on Saturday, while the region continues to experience intermittent showers.
Delhi has already recorded over 1,000 mm of rainfall this month, marking the highest rainfall since 2021 and the second highest in the last decade.
