Pune: Ernst & Young (EY) expressed its deep sorrow following the death of its 26-year-old employee, Anna Sebastian Perayil, reportedly due to “excessive workload.” In a statement, the company stressed its commitment to improving workplace conditions and providing a healthy environment for its employees across the country.

Anna, a chartered accountant from Kerala, had joined EY’s Pune office in March 2024, working with the Audit team at SR Batliboi, an EY member firm. She tragically passed away in July 2024, after just four months at the firm. EY described her death as an “irreparable loss.”

“We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing, and our deepest condolences go to her bereaved family,” the company said in its statement. “While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all necessary assistance and will continue to support them during this difficult time.”

EY emphasized that the well-being of its employees remains a top priority and assured that it is taking the concerns raised by Anna’s family with “the utmost seriousness and humility.” The company also reiterated its commitment to finding ways to improve and create a healthier workplace for its 100,000 employees across its member firms in India.

The company’s response comes amidst rising concerns over workplace stress and burnout in the corporate sector, with demands for better employee well-being and work-life balance.
