New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced on Thursday that Atishi Marlena, the party’s newly chosen Chief Minister-designate, will take the oath of office on Saturday, September 21. The decision comes after a proposal from Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, which shifted the initial swearing-in date from September 26-27.
Atishi, who has been a key figure in the Delhi government and holds multiple portfolios, was unanimously chosen by AAP legislators to lead the government following Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation earlier this week. The resignation came in the wake of his bail by the Supreme Court in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.
Sources within the party indicated that Atishi will not be the only one sworn in on Saturday. Several members of her council of ministers, including Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain, who were part of Kejriwal’s previous Cabinet, will also take the oath. Additionally, two AAP MLAs are expected to be inducted into the new Cabinet.
Atishi, the lone woman minister in Kejriwal’s Cabinet, will assume leadership with just a few months left before the Delhi Assembly elections, set to take place in early 2025. Her appointment as Chief Minister marks a significant milestone in the AAP’s leadership transition amid a challenging political landscape following the arrests of both Arvind Kejriwal and his former deputy, Manish Sisodia.
