New Delhi: The Union Labour Ministry has launched an investigation into the death of a 26-year-old chartered accountant, Anna Sebastian Perayil, who was employed at Ernst & Young (EY) India. Her mother has blamed overwork and extreme job pressure for her daughter’s tragic demise, prompting widespread public outrage. Anna, who had joined the company just four months prior, passed away in July this year.
Responding to the incident, Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing her condolences and confirming that the ministry would thoroughly investigate the matter. She stressed that the allegations of an unsafe and exploitative work environment would be addressed with the seriousness they deserve.
A Mother’s Heartbreaking Letter
Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, penned an emotional letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani, urging the company to rethink its work culture, which she says places immense stress on employees. In the letter, she detailed the circumstances leading up to Anna’s death, recounting how her daughter had been overwhelmed by late-night work and constant pressure.
“She was just 26 years old and had so much to look forward to. But on July 20, my world collapsed when I received the news of her passing,” wrote Anita, describing her daughter as an exceptional student who was proud to have earned her place at such a prestigious firm.
She highlighted how Anna struggled with work demands, even on her convocation day, working late nights and weekends without sufficient rest. Despite health warnings and suggestions from her family to quit, Anna remained committed to her job, but the mounting pressure became too much.
What EY India Said
In response to the tragic incident, EY India expressed deep sadness over Anna’s passing. In a statement, the company said it was taking the family’s concerns with “utmost seriousness and humility.” The firm assured that it prioritizes the well-being of its employees and will continue to work towards creating a healthier work environment.
“We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing in July 2024, and our deepest condolences go to the bereaved family. While no measure can compensate for the loss, we have provided all the assistance and will continue to do so,” EY said.
Outrage Over Work Culture
Anna’s death has reignited conversations about workplace stress and the toll it takes on young professionals. BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who also highlighted the incident, termed it “very sad and disturbing” and called for a thorough investigation into the working conditions at EY India.
Anna’s family has expressed deep hurt, particularly over the fact that no representatives from EY attended her funeral. “This absence at such a critical moment, for an employee who gave her all to your organization, is deeply hurtful,” her mother wrote in her letter.
