New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday demanded government accommodation for its national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, following his resignation as Delhi Chief Minister. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha stated that Kejriwal is entitled to the accommodation as the leader of a national party.
Speaking at a press conference, Chadha announced that AAP would officially write to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, urging them to provide the accommodation within the next few days. Kejriwal, who stepped down from his position as chief minister earlier this week, is expected to vacate his official residence within 15 days.
Chadha explained that every national party in India is entitled to two key resources: an office and accommodation for its leader to operate from the national capital. AAP achieved national party status following its performance in the Gujarat Assembly polls in 2022.
“After a prolonged struggle, the Centre finally provided AAP with an office. Now, we ask that the Centre adhere to the rules and provide Arvind Kejriwal with government accommodation as his right,” Chadha emphasized. He pointed out that other national party leaders, including BJP’s JP Nadda, Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge, and BSP’s Mayawati, have been granted government housing in Delhi.
AAP is hopeful the request will be fulfilled without political considerations. “We hope there won’t be any need to take legal recourse this time,” Chadha added, noting that Kejriwal does not own personal property or a house of his own.
Following Kejriwal’s resignation, he will relinquish all official privileges provided to him as chief minister after the new chief minister is sworn in.
