New Delhi: UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West began her two-day visit to India on Monday, focusing on key areas such as the climate crisis, technology, health, education, and development. Her agenda also includes pushing efforts to negotiate a mutually beneficial free trade agreement (FTA) and bilateral investment treaty.

During her meetings with senior Indian ministers and officials, West is set to reinforce the UK’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with India. At a meeting with the external affairs ministry, she will emphasize the enduring cultural and historical ties between the two nations, according to the British high commission.

Focus on Strategic Collaboration

The visit builds on the ambitions outlined by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy during his trip to India in July. West’s discussions aim to deepen collaboration in areas critical for mutual growth and prosperity.

“I am delighted to be visiting India for the first time as Minister for the Indo-Pacific. As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, India is a vital partner,” said West. “My visit reaffirms the UK’s commitment to fostering deeper cooperation with India and driving forward greater growth and prosperity for both our nations.”

Cultural and Educational Ties

As part of her visit, West will participate in an education roundtable at the British Council. The session will highlight the “living bridge” between India and the UK, which connects the two nations through their shared cultural, educational, and social ties.

West will also visit the historic Jama Masjid in Delhi to learn about its architecture and heritage, further deepening cultural understanding between the two countries.

Continuing the Momentum

West’s visit follows her trip to Bangladesh, where she reaffirmed the UK’s support for the interim government’s efforts toward a democratic and prosperous future. In India, she aims to sustain the momentum in bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of mutual growth in various sectors.
