Rio de Janeiro: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This marks their first meeting since India and China signed the border disengagement agreement in October, aiming to de-escalate tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Progress on Border Disengagement
Jaishankar noted significant progress in the implementation of the border agreement. “On-ground implementation has proceeded as planned, particularly along the friction points in Depsang and Demchok,” he said. Both leaders expressed optimism about recent disengagement efforts and discussed further steps to strengthen bilateral relations.
Focus on Bilateral Relations and Global Issues
The discussion extended beyond border issues to global matters and the countries’ roles in international platforms such as G20 and BRICS. “Our contributions to these platforms underscore the importance of strong bilateral relations between India and China,” Jaishankar remarked.
Commitment to Strengthen Ties
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized readiness to enhance cooperation with India and build strategic mutual trust. “China stands ready to deliver on important understandings reached between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping,” the spokesperson said.
Historical Border Breakthrough
On October 21, India announced a historic border agreement with China, resolving a years-long standoff marked by military build-ups and confrontations. Both sides have since begun dismantling military structures and pulling back troops to pre-conflict positions in the Ladakh region.
The Jaishankar-Wang Yi meeting highlights the commitment of both nations to build on this agreement, addressing ongoing challenges and fostering mutual cooperation.
