New Delhi: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress general secretary and newly elected MP from Wayanad, Kerala, is set to take her oath in the Lok Sabha today. This marks her first entry as an MP, alongside her brother Rahul Gandhi, a Raebareli MP, and mother Sonia Gandhi, a Rajya Sabha member, creating a historic moment with three members of the Gandhi family in Parliament.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be the third woman in the Gandhi family to take oath as an MP, following in the footsteps of her mother Sonia Gandhi and grandmother, the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
A Thumping Win in Wayanad
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra won the Wayanad bypoll with a massive margin of over four lakh votes, surpassing the margin previously achieved by Rahul Gandhi. Her victory has been described as a strong mandate, with Priyanka committing to being the voice of her constituents in Parliament.
“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the trust you have placed in me. I will make sure that over time, you truly feel this victory has been your victory… I look forward to being your voice in Parliament,” she expressed after her win.
Historical Gandhi Family Presence
This marks the first time in decades that three members of the Gandhi family will simultaneously represent both Houses of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi, who vacated the Wayanad seat after opting to retain Raebareli, paved the way for Priyanka’s entry into active parliamentary politics.
Apart from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress leader Ravindra Chavan, who triumphed in Nanded, will also take the oath today in the Lok Sabha.
Priyanka’s Political Journey
Since her entry into politics in 2019, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has played a pivotal role in Congress’s strategies, especially in Uttar Pradesh. While the party did not fare well in the 2022 state elections, she was instrumental in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the INDIA bloc stopped BJP from crossing the majority mark of 272 seats in the Lok Sabha.
Under her leadership, the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance secured 43 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 seats. Her role was also critical in Congress victories in Raebareli and Amethi, marking a significant comeback for the party.
