The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, successfully organized a One-Day National Workshop on “Image Processing and Machine Learning for Mineral Characterization” on January 17, 2025. Sponsored by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), the workshop provided a platform for knowledge exchange, hands-on training, and discussions on emerging AI applications in mineral characterization.

The event commenced with a welcome speech by Dr. Shamama Anwar, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, BIT Mesra. She emphasized the workshop’s objective of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and advancing research in artificial intelligence applications for geosciences.

Dr. Abhijit Mustafi, Head of the Department of CSE, BIT Mesra, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in bridging the gap between academia and industry. He stated, “This workshop is a great initiative that brings together experts and researchers to explore AI-driven solutions for mineral characterization.”
The workshop featured an insightful technical session by Dr. Raju Poddar, Dean Research, Innovation& Enterprenuirship, who delved into the intricate aspects of machine learning and image processing techniques for mineral characterization.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Rajiva Kumar Singh, General Manager (Exploration), CMPDI, Ranchi, delivered a keynote address on the significance of mineral extraction and characterization. He also outlined the steps taken by CMPDI in implementing image processing and machine learning techniques to enhance mineral exploration and resource management.
The workshop witnessed active participation from students, researchers, and faculty members, all of whom received certificates upon successful completion. Participants engaged in hands-on exercises and discussions, making the event a valuable learning experience.
The convenors, Dr. Shamama Anwar and Dr. Subrajeet Mohapatra, expressed their gratitude to all speakers, participants, and organizers for making the workshop a resounding success.
