Ranchi: For the second time in Jharkhand’s political history, the state assembly is functioning without a Leader of Opposition. Despite over three months passing since the election results on November 23, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has yet to select a leader for the post.
BJP’s Dilemma in Choosing a Strong Leader
BJP workers and supporters expect a leader who can revive the party in Jharkhand, but the delay in appointing the Leader of Opposition (LoP) raises questions about the party’s internal strategy. The state BJP leaders are looking toward the central leadership for guidance, but the delay suggests a lack of urgency from the central leadership.
This delay echoes the BJP’s struggle in 2019 when Babulal Marandi was chosen as the LoP after rejoining the BJP. However, the assembly did not recognize his appointment, forcing the party to eventually appoint Amar Bauri.
Factors Behind BJP’s Indecision
1. No Consensus on Party President and LoP
The absence of a state BJP president is a key reason for the delay. The party is attempting to balance caste equations and accommodate senior leaders, but has been unable to finalize a name.
2. Babulal Marandi Factor
• As state BJP president, Marandi led the party to electoral defeat.
• A section within the BJP argues that tribals do not accept him as a leader since he contests from a general seat.
• If Marandi is not reappointed as party chief or LoP, the BJP must find an alternative position for him.
3. Chamap Soren’s Uncertain Role
• Champai Soren is the only tribal leader who won from a tribal seat.
• The BJP is uncertain about his long-term loyalty to the party.
• Some BJP leaders even prefer that he return to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to ease the leadership puzzle.
4. Declining Kurmi Support
• The Mahato (Kurmi) community distanced itself from the BJP in the last elections.
• A section within the party wants a Kurmi leader as either the state president or LoP to regain community support.
• However, OBC representation is divided between the Vaishya and Kurmi communities, making decision-making complex.
5. Raghubar Das’s Role
• Having returned from his governorship, Das is speculated to be a potential state BJP president.
• His appointment could impact the choice of LoP, as the party may try to balance leadership positions among different factions.
Internal Adjustments Delaying Decision
Currently, BJP lacks a strong tribal or Kurmi leader, which is affecting decision-making. The Leader of Opposition will likely be finalized only after the state BJP president is elected. Meanwhile, the party is attempting to adjust senior leaders to ensure no major faction feels sidelined.
