Chennai: In a major development for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans, MS Dhoni is set to return as the captain of the team for the remainder of IPL 2025. Dhoni takes over the reins from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hairline fracture in his elbow.
Gaikwad sustained the injury during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news during a press conference ahead of their upcoming clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Stephen Fleming Confirms Dhoni’s Return As Captain
Speaking to the media, Fleming said, “He (Ruturaj) got hit in Guwahati. He’s been operating with an amount of pain. We got an X-ray, which was inconclusive, and we had an MRI, which revealed a fracture in his elbow, in the radial neck.”
Fleming added, “We appreciate the efforts that he’s gone to in terms of trying to play, but unfortunately, he’d be out of the tournament from now. We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL.”
Fans Go Into Frenzy Over Thala’s Return
As soon as the announcement was made, CSK fans flooded social media with emotional reactions. The return of “Thala” Dhoni has created massive excitement ahead of the crucial match against KKR. Many fans expressed sympathy for Ruturaj but also saw Dhoni’s return as a possible turning point in CSK’s struggling campaign.
Dhoni’s Last Captaincy Appearance Was IPL 2023 Final
Dhoni last led CSK in the IPL 2023 final, where the team defeated Gujarat Titans to win their fifth IPL title. Ahead of the 2024 season, Dhoni had passed on the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, CSK’s performance in the ongoing season has been disappointing, with the team losing their last four matches and registering only one victory so far.
What’s Next For CSK?
All eyes will now be on the toss as MS Dhoni walks out as captain once again when CSK takes on KKR. Fans hope that Dhoni’s leadership will revive CSK’s fortunes and bring back their winning momentum.
