New Delhi: The central government has officially extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one more year. With this extension, Sood will now continue in office until May 2026, beyond his originally scheduled term ending on May 24, 2025.

Cabinet Committee approves decision

The extension was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), and the order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Officials confirmed that the decision was taken during a selection committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi as members.

Formal clearance on May 5

A letter signed by Manisha Saxena, Secretary of the Appointments Committee, confirmed that formal approval for the extension was granted on May 5, 2025.

Background

Praveen Sood was appointed as CBI Director in May 2023 for an initial term of two years. A 1986-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, Sood is known for his extensive experience in policing and has led the CBI during a critical period of high-profile investigations and institutional reforms.

With this extension, he is set to continue leading the country’s premier investigating agency until May 2026, maintaining continuity in leadership amid ongoing sensitive national probes.
