The weather turned deadly in Bihar even before the arrival of the monsoon. On Monday, sudden changes in weather and lightning strikes killed 12 people across several districts, while over a dozen others were seriously injured. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds over the next 48 hours.

Buxar Worst Hit

Buxar district witnessed the maximum casualties. In Chausa Ghat under Mufassil police station, several people taking shelter under a Peepal tree during rain were struck by lightning, killing two on the spot and injuring many others. In Narbatpur, a cattle herder died, while in Rajapur, a 12-year-old boy collecting mangoes also lost his life due to lightning.

Three Deaths In Katihar

In Katihar district’s Falka police station area, an elderly woman died while grazing goats. Another woman working in the fields at Barsoi block was struck by lightning. In Magheli village of Falka, a teenager lost his life while bathing in the rain.

Casualties In Kaimur And Champaran

Kaimur and West Champaran (Bagaha) districts also reported three deaths each. Bhagalpur district recorded one fatality. While the rainfall brought some relief from the heat, lightning strikes brought tragedy to several homes.

Monsoon To Intensify, IMD Issues Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the monsoon to become fully active in Bihar by June 17-18. Districts including West Champaran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Kishanganj, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Banka, Nawada, Gaya, and Rohtas have been warned of lightning and strong winds (40-50 km/h).

Authorities Appeal For Caution

IMD has advised people to avoid open fields, trees, and elevated places during storms. The state disaster management department has also been put on alert to provide swift emergency assistance if needed.
