New Delhi: India has achieved a historic milestone in the QS World University Rankings 2026, with 54 institutions making it to the global list—an all-time high. This impressive showing makes India the fourth most represented country globally, trailing only the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. The growth is driven by a 390% surge in the number of Indian institutions ranked over the past decade, solidifying India’s status as the fastest-growing G20 nation in higher education rankings.

IIT Delhi achieves all-time high rank

Heading the Indian lineup is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, which has soared to the 123rd position globally, sharing its rank with the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. This marks a massive leap from its 197th spot in 2024 and 150th in 2025. IIT Delhi excelled in Employer Reputation (50th globally), Citations per Faculty (86th), and Academic Reputation (142nd), reflecting growing global recognition of its quality.

IITs and IISc dominate, non-IITs rise

IIT Bombay remains in the global top 130 despite a slight drop from last year, securing 129th place and maintaining a stellar 39th rank in Employer Reputation. IIT Madras posted a dramatic rise of 47 positions to reach 180th, entering the top 200 for the first time. IISc Bangalore (219), IIT Kanpur (222), and IIT Kharagpur (215) continued to hold strong positions.

Delhi University ranked 328th, standing out among non-IIT institutions, while Anna University marked its presence by entering the top 500 at rank 465. IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee also secured global ranks of 334 and 339 respectively.
