Damascus: Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa strongly condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes on the capital, calling the attacks a “wide-scale targeting of civilian and government facilities.” In a televised address on Thursday, a day after the strikes, Sharaa asserted that Syria is “not afraid of war” and vowed accountability for those responsible for “abusing our Druze people.”

Local control over Druze security

Amid rising tensions, Sharaa announced that responsibility for securing Druze regions would now rest with community elders and local factions. He emphasized that external manipulation of Druze citizens would not be tolerated. “We reject any attempt to drag you into the hands of an external party,” he said, reinforcing Syria’s commitment to internal sovereignty.

International mediation praised

While warning of potential escalation, Sharaa acknowledged the role of US, Arab, and Turkish efforts in preventing the situation from spiraling further. He credited these diplomatic interventions with averting what he described as an “unknown fate” for the region.
