San Francisco: OpenAI has begun rolling out GPT-5, its latest language model, to both free and paid ChatGPT users. The update brings new variants, expanded system integrations, and significant improvements in performance and safety. Access is being released in stages, with users seeing a GPT-5 welcome screen once enabled for their account.

New Variants and Features

GPT-5 comes in multiple versions — GPT-5-mini for lighter tasks, GPT-5-nano for API use at faster and cheaper rates, and Pro-tier exclusives GPT-5-pro and GPT-5-thinking. Free users can access GPT-5 and GPT-5-mini, while paid tiers get higher usage limits. The interface now automatically selects the best model based on query complexity. Pro users will soon be able to integrate Gmail, Google Calendar, and Contacts, with other tiers gaining access later. Users can also customise chat colours and choose from four personality modes — Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd.

Performance, Pricing, and Safety

The context window has expanded to 256,000 tokens, reducing hallucination rates by up to 65% compared to earlier models. GPT-5 shows stronger coding performance, improved health-related task handling, and better agentic task execution such as browser and API calls. API pricing starts at $1.25 per million input tokens for GPT-5, with cheaper rates for mini and nano versions. Safety upgrades include safer completions for sensitive prompts, over 5,000 hours of testing, and built-in fail-safe mechanisms.
