Trump Adviser Warns India On Tariff Standoff, Links Talks To Russian Oil Trade

Washington: Donald Trump’s top economic adviser Kevin Hassett has warned that the US President will not ease punitive tariffs on Indian imports unless New Delhi reduces its Russian crude trade. His comments highlight growing tension as the US doubled duties on Indian goods to 50 per cent, making India one of the hardest-hit countries alongside Brazil.

Hassett’s Remarks On Negotiations

Calling trade talks with India “complicated,” Hassett accused New Delhi of “intransigence” in opening its markets to American products. He linked the issue to US efforts to pressure Russia, stating, “If the Indians don’t budge, I don’t think President Trump will.” He compared the process to a marathon, stressing that negotiations must accept “ebbs and flows” before a final position is reached.

Team Trump’s Tariff Outlook

Hassett’s warning followed similar comments by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said tariffs were not only about Russian oil but also about stalled trade deal discussions. Bessent told Fox Business he had expected a deal with India earlier this year, but described New Delhi as “a bit uncooperative.” Despite the tough stance, he expressed optimism, noting, “India is the world’s largest democracy, and the US is the world’s largest economy. At the end of the day, we will come together.”

India’s Response

India has maintained it will not compromise on national interests, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowing to protect the country’s farmers. Officials estimate the tariffs could affect $48.2 billion worth of exports, with risks of job losses and slower growth if shipments to the US become commercially unviable. Still, the government asserts it is prepared to withstand pressure and continue dialogue with Washington.
