New Delhi: Former India captain Rahul Dravid has resigned as head coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR), creating a stir ahead of IPL 2026. The decision comes amid uncertainty over captain Sanju Samson’s future with the team.
Dravid Declines Expanded Role
The franchise confirmed on Saturday that Dravid had stepped down. In a statement, RR revealed that following a recent structural review, Dravid was offered a broader role within the team. However, he declined the position. Having guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title as head coach, Dravid had joined RR before IPL 2025 in what was expected to be a long-term association. His sudden exit, therefore, has surprised many.
Legacy With Rajasthan Royals
RR praised Dravid’s deep impact on the franchise, noting that his leadership shaped strong values and influenced an entire generation of players. Dravid, who captained RR in IPL 2012 and 2013 and mentored the team in 2014 and 2015, returned as head coach before IPL 2025, raising hopes of a second title after their inaugural win in 2008. However, RR endured a disappointing season in 2025, finishing ninth with just four wins from 14 games. Injuries to regular captain Sanju Samson, who played only nine matches, further hampered the team.
The Road Ahead for RR
While Dravid’s departure leaves a leadership vacuum, RR expressed gratitude for his remarkable service and wished him well. With Sanju Samson’s fitness concerns and young Riyan Parag captaining in his absence last season, the franchise faces big decisions ahead of IPL 2026 to revive its fortunes.
