Kolkata: Torrential overnight rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds battered Kolkata, flooding streets and severely disrupting air traffic on Tuesday, 23 September 2025. According to PTI, at least 30 flights were cancelled and over 30 delayed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, while eight people reportedly lost their lives due to electrocution in rain-related incidents.

Airlines Alert Passengers Amid Chaos

Leading carriers — IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air — issued travel advisories warning passengers of possible delays and cancellations. IndiGo urged customers to “keep extra time in hand” and check real-time flight status before leaving home, citing heavy traffic on airport routes. Air India confirmed “persistent and heavy rain may impact flights to and from Kolkata” and asked passengers to verify schedules online.

SpiceJet and Akasa Air Join Advisory Push

SpiceJet informed flyers that both departures and arrivals at Kolkata would face disruptions. Meanwhile, Akasa Air, which had already cautioned about weather challenges in Mumbai, Pune, and Kolkata, recommended passengers allocate additional travel time to avoid last-minute hurdles.

City Struggles With Waterlogging

Heavy waterlogging and traffic snarls in key areas further compounded travel woes. Authorities are on alert as forecasts warn of continued showers through the week, with restoration of normalcy at the airport hinging on weather conditions improving.
