Mumbai: Actress Deepika Padukone has finally broken her silence on the controversy surrounding her demand for an 8-hour work shift and higher fees, which reportedly led to her exit from two major South Indian films — Spirit and Kalki 2898 AD (Kalki 2). In a recent interview, Deepika addressed the criticism and called out the industry’s outdated work culture and gender bias.
Calls for Organised Work Culture
Deepika said she has always advocated for a structured and professional work environment in the Indian film industry. “This industry is extremely cruel. There’s a ‘chalta hai’ attitude when it comes to work. If we call ourselves an industry, then we should function like one. The truth is, we are very disorganised. It’s time we move towards a better working culture and system,” she told CNBC-TV18.
Questions Gender Bias Against Female Actors
Without naming anyone, Deepika pointed out that several male actors have worked only 8-hour shifts for years and never shoot on weekends, yet their demands are considered normal. “Why is it unprofessional when female actors ask for the same? Many male actors have these conditions, and they’re accepted. I want female actors to have the same respect and structure,” she said, highlighting the industry’s double standards.
Mental Health Advocacy and Upcoming Projects
Apart from work culture reforms, Deepika is actively working to raise awareness about mental health. She recently celebrated 10 years of her foundation, Live Love Laugh, on World Mental Health Day in Madhya Pradesh.
On the professional front, Deepika will next be seen alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the action film King, which also marks the acting debut of Suhana Khan.
