Patna: A festive moment at Lalu Prasad Yadav’s residence has snowballed into a political controversy ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. The BJP has slammed the RJD chief after his daughter Rohini Acharya shared pictures of her children in Halloween costumes, recalling Yadav’s earlier comment calling the Kumbh Mela “meaningless.”
BJP Calls Out ‘Double Standards’
The BJP Kisan Morcha posted a split video juxtaposing Yadav’s old remarks on Kumbh with visuals from the Halloween celebration, accusing the RJD leader of hypocrisy. “Don’t forget, people of Bihar, this is the same Lalu Yadav who called the grand Kumbh of faith and spirituality useless and is celebrating the British festival Halloween. Whoever attacks faith, the people of Bihar will not vote for him,” the post read.
The Viral Post That Triggered The Row
Rohini Acharya shared photos on social media showing her children dressed as a Grim Reaper and other Halloween characters, with Lalu Yadav smiling beside them. “Happy Halloween to everyone,” she captioned the post. The images quickly went viral, prompting BJP leaders to accuse the RJD patriarch of mocking Indian traditions while embracing Western ones.
Context Behind The Kumbh Controversy
In February 2025, Lalu Yadav had courted backlash when he said, “Kumbh ka koi matlab hai? Faltu hai Kumbh (Does Kumbh have any meaning? It’s useless).” The BJP condemned the statement, saying it revealed the RJD’s “disrespect towards Hindu faith.” Party spokesperson Manoj Sharma had remarked that such comments “insult the sentiments of crores of devotees.”
Elections Around The Corner
The political slugfest comes just days before the Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on November 6 and 11. While the RJD remains silent on the latest controversy, the BJP appears intent on using the episode to project the party as “anti-Hindu” in its campaign narrative.
