Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Arun Bharti, who represents Jamui, put forward India’s position on peacebuilding at the United Nations headquarters in New York, stressing national ownership, support tailored to each country’s needs and the promotion of social justice for lasting peace in Africa.
India Represented at Ninth Annual Consultative Meeting
Bharti represented India at the ninth annual consultative meeting of the UN Peacebuilding Commission and the African Union Peace and Security Council, held in the ECOSOC Chamber. He said national ownership must be paramount in peacebuilding, and that the responsibility for setting priorities should rest with the government of the country concerned.
Aid Should Strengthen, Not Replace, National Efforts
He stressed that international assistance must take into account the needs and priorities of the country concerned, and should aim to strengthen its efforts rather than make decisions in its place. Rules for cooperation between countries should be flexible, he said, since every country’s circumstances differ and a uniform approach would not be right. He also called for better coordination among the UN Peacebuilding Fund, the African Development Bank and other partners, adding that financial aid alone is not enough for lasting peace and that all sections of society must take part in the development process.
Digital Public Systems and 2025 Peacebuilding Review
Bharti spoke of the role of digital technology in delivering government services, saying digital public systems can make services easier, more effective and more transparent. He also referred to the 2025 review of the UN’s peacebuilding architecture, which emphasised strengthening the partnership between the two bodies and following up on decisions from earlier meetings.
“Voice of Jamui Is Now India’s Voice”
On X, Bharti thanked PM Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and LJP (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan. He wrote that peace endures only when it is inclusive, involves women and youth, and rests on the priorities of the country concerned, adding that India’s outlook is inspired by “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” and that the voice of Jamui had become India’s voice on the world stage.
