Abuja: The United States carried out airstrikes targeting Islamic State-linked militants in northwest Nigeria, marking a significant escalation in counterterrorism efforts as Nigeria continues to struggle with multiple armed groups and worsening security challenges.

Who Were the Likely Targets

Although Nigerian and US officials did not officially name the group hit, security analysts believe the strikes likely targeted Lakurawa, a lesser-known Islamic State affiliate operating mainly in Sokoto and Kebbi states. Lakurawa is locally associated with the Islamic State Sahel Province and has grown increasingly violent over the past year, attacking remote villages and security forces.

Origins and Expansion of Lakurawa

Lakurawa is believed to have originated in neighboring Niger and became more active in Nigeria after the 2023 military coup in Niger weakened cross-border security coordination. Analysts say the group first appeared around 2017 after being invited by local leaders to help defend communities against bandits, but later turned against residents and imposed harsh interpretations of Sharia law.

Tactics and Atrocities

The group is now accused of widespread killings, kidnappings, sexual violence, and armed robbery. Security experts note that many communities consider Lakurawa more dangerous than the criminal gangs it initially claimed to fight. The militants are known to exploit forests along the Niger-Nigeria border, allowing them to move quickly on motorcycles and evade sustained military operations.

Islamic State Sahel Province Factor

Some attacks attributed to Lakurawa may actually be carried out by the Islamic State Sahel Province, which has quietly expanded from Niger into northwest Nigeria. According to conflict monitoring groups, the faction operates covertly, embedding itself along porous borders and gradually extending toward Benin.

Governance Gaps Fueling Militancy

Experts argue Nigeria’s insecurity is driven more by governance failures than military weakness. Poor state presence, poverty, unemployment, and hunger in rural areas make recruitment easier for militant groups. Nigerian officials have acknowledged that military force alone cannot resolve the crisis without stronger governance and development.

Significance of US Involvement

Nigeria confirmed the US airstrikes were conducted through intelligence sharing and strategic coordination. Analysts view the strikes as crucial support for Nigeria’s overstretched armed forces, which are battling insurgencies across several regions. However, experts warn that without sustained operations and improved governance, militant groups are likely to regroup and continue their attacks.
