New Delhi: Delhi and several parts of north India witnessed major disruption in air and road travel as dense fog and smog blanketed the region, pushing the national capital’s Air Quality Index (AQI) into the “severe” category and forcing airlines and authorities to issue fresh advisories.
Flights Delayed Amid Dense Fog Conditions
The Ministry of Civil Aviation warned that flight operations at select northern airports could be impacted due to low visibility caused by fog. Passengers were advised to stay in touch with airlines through official channels, arrive early at airports, and prepare for possible delays or cancellations. Airlines including IndiGo and Air India confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation and making operational adjustments to minimise inconvenience.
Delhi Airport Operating Under CAT III Protocols
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport stated that flight operations are being conducted under CAT III conditions due to dense fog. While this allows aircraft to land in extremely low visibility, authorities cautioned that delays and cancellations remain likely. Ground staff have been deployed to assist passengers, and flyers have been urged to check flight status with airlines before travel.
AQI Slips Into ‘Severe’ Category
Delhi’s air quality deteriorated sharply on Monday morning, with the AQI touching 402 at 8 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Several areas recorded even higher pollution levels, including Anand Vihar (455), Wazirpur (443), Rohini (442), Punjabi Bagh (426), and Patparganj (431). Even areas showing relatively lower readings remained in the “very poor” range.
Poor Visibility Affects Daily Life
A thick layer of fog further reduced visibility across the city, affecting road traffic and causing discomfort to residents. Motorists were seen driving with headlights on in areas such as Anand Vihar, Dhaula Kuan, Akshardham, Dwarka, and Kartavya Path. Authorities continue to monitor conditions as pollution and fog combine to worsen winter travel challenges.
