Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari paid a spiritual visit to Belur Math in Howrah on Thursday, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. He prostrated before the saints of the Math and sought their blessings, spending some time at the revered institution.
Significance of Belur Math
Belur Math was established by Swami Vivekananda in 1897-98 and remains one of Bengal’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks. BJP associates the institution with Hindu cultural renaissance and Vivekananda’s ideology. During the election campaign, PM Modi had also visited the Math to seek blessings from the saints.
A Pattern of Spiritual Gestures
This visit continues a pattern of spiritual gestures by Suvendu Adhikari since assuming office. On May 13, 2026, the day he took oath as Chief Minister, he had gone to the state assembly and prostrated on its steps — images that went viral and were described as a new benchmark in Bengal’s political culture. On the same day, he had also touched the feet of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to seek his blessings, who had earlier campaigned for Adhikari in the Kanthi constituency during the election campaign.
