Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has sought a response from the state government and the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) over their failure to demolish the dilapidated and dangerous Laxmi Mansion building in Jamshedpur, directing both to file affidavits in the matter.

Court Questions Two-Month Delay

Justice Sanjay Prasad of the Jharkhand High Court, during the hearing in which the Jamshedpur DC appeared virtually, asked why the building had not been demolished despite JNAC passing an order for its evacuation and demolition on March 25, 2026 — nearly two months ago. The DC informed the court that some tenants residing in Laxmi Mansion have not yet vacated the premises, and that whatever order the court passes will be complied with.

State Government and NIT Had Flagged Danger

Additional Advocate General Sachin Kumar, appearing for the state government, informed the court that both the state government and NIT Jamshedpur had submitted reports confirming the dilapidated and dangerous condition of the building. Following these reports, JNAC issued the demolition and evacuation order on March 25, 2026. The responsibility for carrying out the demolition lies with JNAC.

Petitioner Warns Building Could Collapse Any Time

The petition was filed by Dumkeshwar Mahto, who warned the court that Laxmi Mansion could collapse at any moment and urged that JNAC’s demolition order be enforced immediately. The court had also summoned the tenants of the building as respondents in the case.
