Ranchi: The long-standing shortage of beds in the Neurosurgery Department at RIMS is set to be resolved, with the hospital management deciding to permanently transfer two wards of the Eye Department to Neurosurgery. Renovation and reconstruction work has already begun and is expected to be completed within two to three months, after which 60 to 70 additional beds will be added to the department.

State’s Largest Neuro Centre Overwhelmed With Patients

The RIMS Neurosurgery Department is the largest neuro centre in the state, drawing patients not only from Jharkhand but also from Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. The department currently has around 100 ward beds and an ICU of 40 to 50 beds, yet the patient load is so overwhelming that even critical patients are often made to lie on mattresses on the floor.

Doctors Also Suffer Due to Bed Shortage

The impact of the bed shortage extends beyond patients. Regular monitoring, medicine distribution, and examination of floor-admitted patients become difficult, and reaching a patient quickly during an emergency poses a serious challenge. Maintaining infection control and hygiene standards also becomes harder under such conditions.

Crores Spent on Modern Equipment, More Purchases Planned

Alongside the bed expansion, the department is also upgrading its medical equipment. Modern equipment worth approximately Rs 1.5 to 2 crore has recently been installed, and the purchase of several additional pieces of equipment is also being planned.

Thousands of Patients to Benefit

Hospital management has stated that after the expansion, the Neurosurgery Department will become more organised, modern, and patient-friendly. Experts believe thousands of patients across the state will directly benefit from the improved infrastructure.
