Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court on Monday heard a public interest litigation filed by Shashi Sagar Verma highlighting the absence of adequate electronic waste disposal infrastructure and a Standard Operating Procedure in Jharkhand, directing the state government and the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board to submit their responses on the matter.

Court Asks Whether SOP Has Been Framed

A bench of Chief Justice MS Sonak and Justice Rajesh Kumar asked the state government and the Pollution Control Board whether an SOP for e-waste disposal has been formulated in Jharkhand. The court’s question comes in the context of the central government having already framed rules for e-waste management, under which state governments are also required to prepare their own SOPs.

E-Waste Mixing With General Waste a Serious Concern

Petitioner’s advocate Shailesh Poddar informed the court that electronic waste is being mixed with ordinary garbage in Jharkhand, causing significant harm to the environment and posing serious health risks to humans and animals alike. He stressed that a proper Electronic Waste Management framework is urgently needed in the state to address the growing problem.
