New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh launched a two-pronged attack on the central government, condemning the Great Nicobar Island project as environmentally devastating and accusing Home Minister Amit Shah of launching an onslaught on the opposition and weakening Indian democracy.
Great Nicobar Port to Destroy Over 16,000 Coral Colonies
Ramesh shared a media report claiming that the proposed transshipment port at Galathea Bay under the Great Nicobar project will cause massive ecological damage. According to the report, the Zoological Survey of India may soon seek permission from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ environment and forest department to relocate over 16,000 coral colonies that stand to be affected by the project. Ramesh alleged that the transshipment port will prove devastating for the environment and lead to the large-scale destruction of coral colonies, also claiming the project is part of the expansion of what he termed the “Modani empire.”
Congress Accuses Amit Shah of Undermining Democracy
On the political front, Ramesh accused Home Minister Amit Shah of launching an assault on the opposition and wrecking Indian democracy to compensate for the government’s failure to pass an important Constitution amendment bill in the Lok Sabha. Congress alleged that the BJP, under Shah’s direction, is enticing elected leaders of opposition parties to switch sides — with several leaders who were elected just two years ago on a strong anti-BJP agenda now joining the ruling party lured by Shah’s inducements.
