Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari told the state assembly on Thursday that no guilty party will be spared in connection with the warehouse collapse in Kolkata’s Taratala area, which occurred on Wednesday and has so far claimed nine lives with 20 people seriously injured.
Compensation Announced
Speaking in the assembly, CM Adhikari announced that Rs 10 lakh compensation will be paid to the family of each person who lost their life in the incident, and Rs 1 lakh in assistance to every injured person.
TMC and Firhad Hakim Named
The Chief Minister revealed that the building plan on record with the municipal corporation bears the signature of Firhad Hakim, former Mayor of Kolkata and a minister in the TMC government. Adhikari took a sharp dig at the TMC, saying the incident is the result of their misdeeds and that no lesson was learned from previous tragedies like the Garden Reach incident.
Owner and Three Others Arrested
Kolkata Police arrested warehouse owner Shambhunath Behera on Thursday morning. Three others taken into custody on Wednesday night — warehouse supervisor Mohammad Gulzar, labour contractor Mohammad Atayul, and Subhash Chaudhary — were also formally arrested. It is alleged that Behera had the warehouse illegally constructed in collusion with certain officials of the then TMC-run KMC board.
