New Delhi: Opposition MPs turned their focus on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, staging a protest at Parliament’s Makar Dwar before proceedings began, holding a banner that read “Who Gave the Order,” demanding accountability over the use of force against student protesters.
Rahul Gandhi Had Demanded Shah’s Resignation a Day Earlier
The protest comes a day after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi demanded Amit Shah’s resignation over the alleged use of pellet guns and other weapons, along with lathi-charge, against students protesting at Jantar Mantar. Gandhi had accused Shah of ordering the use of force against the students, alleging that the firing had taken place on his instructions.
Rijiju Defends Home Minister, Says Magistrates Order Such Action
Defending the Home Minister, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that magistrates are deployed during such protests and it is they who authorise action such as lathi-charge or firing based on the situation on the ground, adding that Rahul Gandhi appeared unaware of this procedure and should therefore apologise for his remarks.
Akhilesh Yadav Draws Comparison to 1990 Ayodhya Firing
Reacting to Rijiju’s defence, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned why, if that reasoning were true, his father Mulayam Singh Yadav, the then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, had long been held responsible for the firing on kar sevaks in Ayodhya.
