Ranbir Kapoor-starrer “Ramayanam” is facing controversy even before its release, with the Shri Ramlila Mahasangh demanding that the film’s makers arrange a special preview screening for the organisation’s representatives ahead of its release in India and abroad.

Mahasangh Cites Adipurush Controversy as Precedent

Mahasangh president Arjun Kumar wrote a letter to director Nitesh Tiwari and the film’s production company outlining the demand, referencing the 2023 film “Adipurush,” which had drawn controversy over its portrayal of several aspects of the Ramayana and reportedly hurt public sentiments. According to a press note, objections had been raised at the time over the depiction of Lanka, as well as the portrayal of Ravana and his army, among other elements, with the Mahasangh stating that such mistakes should not be repeated.

Organisation Seeks Pre-Release Screening to Flag Objectionable Content

The Mahasangh said it had received information suggesting the film may contain certain scenes that could spark controversy, and therefore wants a special screening conducted before release so that any objectionable scenes or dialogue can be removed in time.

Warns of Protests if Demand Is Not Met

The Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has warned that if the filmmakers do not accede to their demand, the organisation will join hands with several Hindu groups to stage protests outside cinema halls in Delhi and other states. So far, the makers of “Ramayanam” have not issued any official response to the demand.
