Ranchi: An anti-encroachment drive on Ranchi’s HEC Bypass Road triggered strong protests from local residents on Tuesday, leading to a road blockade and long queues of vehicles on both sides.
Team Faces Resistance Near Sail Satellite Chowk
A team arrived with a bulldozer near Sail Satellite Chowk, between Birsa Chowk and the bypass road, to clear encroachments. As soon as the team reached the spot, a large number of local residents came out onto the road in protest. Within moments, a crowd gathered and blocked the road entirely, causing a long line of vehicles to build up from Birsa Chowk all the way to DC’s Ghoda Chowk.
Residents Demand Rehabilitation Before Eviction
The affected residents, who say they have been living on the railway land for nearly 20 to 25 years, insisted that the government must first arrange alternative housing before removing them from the site. They have appealed to the government for proper rehabilitation. More than 20 houses reportedly stand along this stretch of road, with several residents running small eateries and ration shops to earn their livelihood. They fear that the demolition drive will leave them without shelter and make it difficult to sustain their daily livelihood. A large crowd remained gathered at the spot at the time of reporting, with tension continuing to prevail over the encroachment-removal action.
