India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill and women’s team opener Shafali Verma have been named the ICC Players of the Month for September, with Gill claiming the award for a record-equalling fifth time and Shafali winning it for the second time.
Gill Equals Hayley Matthews’ Record
Gill earlier won the award in January 2023 and in February and July 2025, and he is now the male player with the most Player of the Month awards. The latest honour puts him level with West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who has also won it five times. He beat Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza to the award. In September, Gill played two ODIs against the West Indies, scoring 110 in the first and 223 off 133 balls in the second, which is the fastest double century in ODI history.
Shafali Beats Atapattu and Sree Charani
In the women’s category, Shafali Verma edged out Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu and India’s Sree Charani. She had previously been named best player last November. In seven T20 internationals in September, she scored 360 runs at an average of 72 and a strike rate of 185. She hit fifties in the Asia Cup semifinal and final, and a century in the Asian Games semifinal, and also took six wickets with the ball.
Third Time Indian Men and Women Share the Honour
This is the third time that Indian male and female cricketers have been named best players together for the same month.
